An Overview

Medical plans offered through CalPERS

The County of Nevada offers several medical plan options through CalPERS, including Health Maintenance Organizations (HMOs) and Preferred Provider Organizations (PPOs).

Delta Dental PPO

When it comes to choosing a dental plan, you want benefits that fit the needs of you and your family. Delta Dental PPO offers quality care, excellent customer service, and comprehensive dental coverage, including orthodontia.

VSP Vision

Nevada County offers a comprehensive vision plan through VSP. The plan pays benefits and offers discounts for most vision care expenses, such as $10 copays. To find more information on VSP or to locate a provider, visit vsp.com.

Basic and Voluntary Life

The County provides complimentary group life and accidental death and dismemberment insurance through Voya. All regular employees working 20 hours or more per week are eligible. Employees can also opt to purchase voluntary employee life, voluntary spouse life, and voluntary child life.

Voluntary Optional Coverage

Choose from any of the following voluntary optional plans: Accident 101, Cancer Assist, Critical Illness 1.0, Life Insurance, Medical Bridge 7000/Hospital Confinement.

Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA)

The County offers a tax-free benefit plan that provides employees with ways to save thousands of dollars per year by offering the option to pay for certain types of expenses with pre-tax payroll deductions. If you choose to participate, this will reduce your taxable income.

Nationwide Retirement Solutions

Save more for retirement with Nationwide! Nevada County is committed to helping employees achieve financial and retirement goals. We partner with Nationwide Retirement Solutions to provide our employees with deferred compensation plans including 401(a), 457(b), and Roth options. The 401(a) has a 90-day deadline from your hire date to enroll.

CalPERS Retirement Plans

Nevada County regular employees are enrolled in the CalPERS Retirement System, and contributions are made automatically. The County pays a generous portion toward your retirement each pay period, and you start to accrue service credit from your first day. Mentorship Program

Our Mentorship Program promotes employee development in specific areas. It also serves as a key succession planning tool aimed at ensuring the organization has high-quality, diverse leaders to successfully achieve the County’s overall mission - now and in the future.

Tuition Reimbursement

The continuing education program assists employees in achieving their higher education degree goals such as AA/AS, BA/BS or MA/MS.

CalPERS (California Public Employees' Retirement System) is the largest public pension fund in the United States, managing retirement benefits for more than 2 million current and former public employees in California. It provides retirement, health, and related financial programs and benefits to public employees, retirees, and their families.

Miscellaneous Retirement (all non-safety positions): 

Tier I: 2.7% at 55 Classic-former employees originally hired on or before 12/13/12 and are returning to Nevada County.

Tier II: 2% at 60 Hired by a CalPERS employer between 12/14/12-12/31/12 and coming to Nevada County with less than 6-months between separation from former CalPERS employer and hire date with Nevada County.

Tier III: 2% at 62 Hired by any CalPERS employer on or after 1/1/13.

Safety Retirement:

Tier I: 3% at 50 Classic-former employees originally hired on or before 12/13/12 and are returning to Nevada County.

Tier II: 3% at 55 Hired by a CalPERS employer between 7/24/11-12/31/12 and coming to Nevada County with less than 6-months between separation from former CalPERS employer and hire date with Nevada County.

Tier III: 2.7% at 57 Hired by any CalPERS employer on or after 1/1/13.
